The Apron: Then & Now

Aprons are nostalgic, feminine and beautiful! We’ve come a long way, baby!

Aprons have been used by humanity for centuries to protect their clothing from damage and stains.  From blacksmiths to cooks, aprons have been considered to be ‘part of the uniform’ for many.

Feelings of femininity, purpose and industriousness surround me when I wear an apron.

My apron says “I’m the Mom around here!

Today, however, aprons are not only functional, but also a reflection of the wearer’s personality and creativity.

Apron patterns are easy to find and fun to make!  Unique homemade aprons make wonderful gifts for your mothers, daughters and friends.

I have five, I think, two of them pretty. Those sure are pretty ones pictured in your post! I tend to put them on when baking or frying or other messy chores, but really should wear them more often.

    • Kelly says:

      Cathy,

When I think of all the stain treater than I could save if I just wore my aprons more often, I get more motivated. :)

  2. simply heidi says:

I have four, and they are all pretty, but also functional. I use them when I cook or clean. I love them! I might have to make that red one with the gathered neck. It’s adorable.

  3. LaVonne says:

I recently bought an apron pattern for mother and daughter. I can’t wait to make them. I love aprons! Can you believe that I don’t even own one? Crazy!

I am visiting from the WFMW meme. It is nice to “meet” you. Enjoy the rest of your week!

    Blessings,

LaVonne, thanks for stopping by and for commenting!

I would love to see your finished apron project! Feel free to upload a picture of it to our Facebook fan page!

  4. daisy says:

I always resisted aprons growing up. Now I’d love to have a collection of vintage-type aprons! I use them when baking bread mostly. Love the ones you showed!

  5. Kimi says:

I really need to get one !! I am so hard on my clothes. But then I live in T shirts so it’s not a big loss.

    • Kelly says:

      Kimi,

You and me both. I just get tired of stain treating all the time! The apron really helps with that.

      Great to hear from you!

  6. Jenni says:

I’m kinda obsessed with aprons! I have several because I think they are so cute. However, I never where them… lol I really should get in the habit. :)

  7. Elizabeth says:

I love my apron! It has a great print of red flowers on white fabric and red ruffles along the edges. I bought it at K-Mart, but it looks like it could have been made for a boutique. I’d love to try my hand at sewing my own! Wearing an apron opened up new possibilities for me…like getting dressed in my work clothes as soon as I get up, rather than waiting until I’ve finished with breakfast and dishes because I’m afraid of spilling on my clothes. ;) Besides, there’s something so cheerful about my apron that it makes me smile when I walk into the kitchen in the mornings, instead of grumbling about the work I have to do.

    • Kelly says:

      Elizabeth,

Aprons are great for keeping your clothes clean, especially when you have to be somewhere. And you’re right, there’s something deliberate and cheerful about wearing one.

  8. Paula` says:

I have several aprons. The one I wear most often in the house for cooking is a vintage red one with a heart shapped pocket on the front. It loops over the neck and ties in the back . The one I wear in the garden is also vintage, and it fits like a smock, but it’s open in the back. It has more wrap around, so I get protection on my hips from my dirty hands.

The cutest apron I have I bought this year @Hobby Lobby during Christmas. It’s a sorta Mrs. Claus type of look, red and green with polka dots and pleats to make it flirty. Love it. I wish that I could wear it all the time, but I like to save it for the Christmas season.

I’m in love with that black and white apron in your post!

    • Kelly says:

      Paula,

Isn’t that one cute? Oh, Hobby Lobby is a dangerous place for me to go, they DO have very cute things. Thanks for commenting.

  9. Debbie says:

I’ve got one, but I think I need more now! I’ve even seen some cute one’s at TJMax and Pier One!
    great post!
    Deb

    • Kelly says:

      Debbie,

It’s easy to get addicted to those things, especially if you find a source of cute ones. I, too, saw some adorable ones at TJMax! Have fun!

  10. Foxmom says:

I have just one. It’s a heavy green material with a green daisy outlined on the center pocket. I just adore it.

  11. Happier Than A Pig in Mud says:

Wear one every time I’m in the kitchen! I have one for everyday plus a few extras:@)

  12. LaDonna says:

I love aprons too! I have a few for regular use and made one that matched my Italian kitchen and it’s hung up for show! My sister used antique ones she found and turned them into a valance for her sewing room window, absolutely adorable!!!

  13. LOVE wearing an apron! I have two full aprons and two half, but I favor the full aprons. I’m forever getting stuff on my shirts when I don’t wear one. Momo Made It is shipping me a new apron as we speak and I can hardly wait. She does a lovely job of choosing fabrics, styles, and her craftsmanship. You can find her ad in my right sidebar. Check out her stuff!

  14. Betty says:

I have one apron that I wear all of the time, but I have two more cut out ready for sewing! I’m also thinking of making an apron just for working in the garden. Kind of like my own personal tool belt. Love the post!

  15. We love our aprons and we put them to good use! We wear them regularly. Besides them being very practical (saving clothes froms splatters and stains) they are such a romantically feminine accessory! The sky is the limit with your styles too. I have 4 – but between me and my 3 daughters, I think we have about 10-12 between us! :-) We even have some (butcher style denim ones) for the boys. They are handy when they make jerkey and butcher and all those fun things!

  16. Alana says:

I only own one and I never wear it. My grandma use to wear them all the time.

  17. Michelle says:

I absolutely love wearing aprons! I own four of them and my husband owns one himself. We wear them every evening when we make dinner together, and if I’m cleaning or cooking during the day (which I usually do at some point) I’m wearing an apron. Hooray for all the wonderfully feminine and domestic nostalgia associated with aprons!

  18. Kim says:

I have that exact black and white apron!! They are so pretty.

  19. Jenn says:

Love the aprons. I have 6 or 8, from plain to fancy, but I wear them all the time.

  20. Kim says:

Kelly, it’s from a site called “Flirty Aprons” ( http://www.flirtyaprons.com) what I can’t remember is where I first saw the site mentioned, I’ve had this apron for a couple of years.

  21. Libby says:

I don’t have ANY…but, now I want one! Love the blue and white one :) What a great post!

  22. Charlotte Moore says:

I started collecting aprons that have LOTS of PINK. I have at least 15 I guess. I have a few hanging on a hook in my kitchen.
