Sustainable Cooking with a Fire Pit

Fire pits are making a major comeback!  And for good reason, they are beautiful, relaxing and very functional as a part of anyone’s sustainability plan!

Whether you purchase a fire pit at your local hardware store, or choose to make a sturdy and long-lasting one yourself, don’t miss the benefits of cooking over it.

Cooking with wood has so many benefits and once you get the hang of it, you’ll be a pro in no time.  Fire pit cooking also offers versatility with your fuel as you can use wood or charcoal, whatever you have available.

“How to Make a Fire Pit”

Once you have a fire pit, you’ll need to learn how to cook on it.

The goal is to get beyond marshmallows and hot dogs.  Learning to use your fire pit will take a little time, but mastering this skill will go a long way insure your personal sustainability!

Ways to Cook over a Fire Pit

The Mountain Man Grill

The “Mountain Man” and the “Mountain Man Jr.” are both rockin’ over-fire grills that are extremely versatile.  There are other variations of this grill in sporting goods stores, etc. and some of you might even be handy enough to be able to make your own.  Whatever you choose, make sure you examine the grill and joints for integrity before each use and maintain it.

The Lumber Jack Grill

A tripod is relatively easy to use. Most consist of three metal rods which break down into smaller segments. After connecting the segments the three legs are spread out in a triangle around the base of your campfire or fire pit. Finally, your cooking devices are attached to the adjustable chain hanging from the apex. This can be raised and lowered as needed to fine tune the amount of heat and fire your food is exposed to, higher for warming and slower cooking and lower for high heat grilling and searing, somewhere in the middle for simmering of stews and soups. When you are done the legs come back apart and the entire tripod can fold up into a relatively small space. (Source)
