How to Plan Your Fall Garden

Disastrous summer garden?  No worries, you get another chance with your fall garden!

Garden redemption is here with fall planting!  If you’ve never had a fall garden, you don’t know what you’re missing!  I really enjoy fall gardening, with less heat and bugs, it is extremely enjoyable.

There are simply some crops that fair better with cooler temperatures, here’s a list:

Alliums:  Garlic, onions and shallots

Cole Crops:  Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale and and kohlrabi

Greens:  Lettuces, spinach, Swiss chard

Legumes:  Beans and peas

Root crops:  Carrots, turnips, parsnips, radishes, beets and rutabegas

Fall planting centers squarely around your first frost date, so it’s important to know when that is.  Find out here!

If you’re like me, I get a lot of mileage from certain apps on my iPhone and Mother Earth News has a great one, “When to Plant” right  here.  I really like this app and it’s well worth $1.99 for all that you get.

  1. I just planted our fall garden. I never thought to garden in the fall before. Duh! :) We planted peas, bok choy and lettuce.

  2. Ruth says:

Do you sow right into the ground for these or do you HAVE to grow indoors for a while? I’m pretty new to gardening. thanks!

      Ruth,

Once the weather in your area begins to turn cool, especially at night, you just sow directly into the ground. Great question!

  3. Great post, Kelly, and timely. I love the chart.

I like the app! Now I’m off to buy my seeds, or whatever it is I’m suppose to plant. lol And now for your next hat trick: “How to Plan Your Winter Knitting”. ;)

  5. Silly question from an aspiring gardener – do you have to plant seasonally if you don’t really get a frost? According to the site you linked, there’s a 40% chance we’ll hit 32 degrees in December. I’ve been here for 4 years and along with those chances, it’ll happen once, at night, and not happen again, lol. BTW, central Cali here. Thanks!!

So I’m the gardner WAY out there . . we have green bean plants (FINALLY!!) about 2″tall . . & I’m planning on covering them, Hoping, no make that PRAYING!! we will finally have SOME fresh green beans!
& THANKS for posting the Dave’s Garden link! I went there & I have til Oct 11th before we hit 50/50 chance of frost. . . . Now I’m dreaming & scheming on a system to cover these precious little plants . . :-)
